Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Well, I'm delighted to be with you again,
Meredith Oke:Meredith. Really. We've got lots to share. I
Meredith Oke:know. So it's going to be an interesting
Meredith Oke:discussion.
Meredith Oke:Okay. I'm really excited. We had so much great
Meredith Oke:feedback on our last conversation. Everyone
Meredith Oke:wanted to know more about the pyramids in Egypt.
Meredith Oke:I have. I put the list of music that you
Meredith Oke:recommended for blood oxygenation into our show
Meredith Oke:notes and had. I also had multiple people email
Meredith Oke:and ask for it. So we sent that out all over the
Meredith Oke:place. So I'm excited to revisit those topics.
Meredith Oke:But to get started, let's just talk about
Meredith Oke:cymatics, because you are sort of on the
Meredith Oke:forefront of this extremely interesting field.
Meredith Oke:And I'm just going to read a little bit from your
Meredith Oke:website because I think this is so beautiful to
Meredith Oke:put cymatics in context for everybody. When the
Meredith Oke:microscope and telescope were invented, they
Meredith Oke:opened vistas into realms that were not even
Meredith Oke:suspected to exist. Sound has been invisible
Meredith Oke:throughout history. Now, with the development of
Meredith Oke:the cymoscopes instrument, the omnipresent,
Meredith Oke:unexplored realms of sound and vibration are made
Meredith Oke:visible for scientific study and artistic
Meredith Oke:appreciation. I love that. And I love that you
Meredith Oke:added artistic appreciation there because this is
Meredith Oke:so beautiful. So with that as the opener, tell us
Meredith Oke:a little bit about cymatics and why it matters so
Meredith Oke:much.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Yeah, well, you know, in the artistic aspect of
Meredith Oke:it brings to mind immediately, Meredith, this
Meredith Oke:bridge that we have between science and art,
Meredith Oke:which, you know, it's not just relation in
Meredith Oke:relation to cymatics, but there is a bridge that
Meredith Oke:exists there. It's kind of a fine line very
Meredith Oke:often, but no, no more, no more exhibited better
Meredith Oke:than with cymatics, because cymatics provides a
Meredith Oke:visual medium for sound. As we, as you've
Meredith Oke:mentioned there, what happens is sound imprints
Meredith Oke:itself onto surfaces everywhere around us all of
Meredith Oke:the time. So whenever the sound present, and
Meredith Oke:actually there always is, you know, even in the
Meredith Oke:quietest of quiet environments on Earth, like an
Meredith Oke:anechoic chamber, for example, there's still
Meredith Oke:sound. So, and therefore, whenever a sound is
Meredith Oke:present and there are membranes present, then
Meredith Oke:there will be cymatic patterns imprinted on them
Meredith Oke:everywhere around you. But a little bit like
Meredith Oke:fingerprints, they are invisible to the unaided
Meredith Oke:eye, but they can be made visible. And what they
Meredith Oke:are, they are representations of the sound. So if
Meredith Oke:we talk about the surface of water, for example,
Meredith Oke:which is what we use now, only use water in the
Meredith Oke:cymascope instrument, which you see by the way,
Meredith Oke:behind me here we have a portable model. If I can
Meredith Oke:bring that into the frame. There's a portable
Meredith Oke:cymascope that we're. We are now developing. And.
Meredith Oke:But anyway, that, again, uses only pure water. So
Meredith Oke:if you think about the vibrations of sound
Meredith Oke:imprinting onto the surface of pure water, it's a
Meredith Oke:little bit like imprinting a fingerprint or a
Meredith Oke:thumbprint on a glass, isn't it? You know, if I,
Meredith Oke:you know, I've got a glass of water, if I hold
Meredith Oke:this glass and know that my fingerprint or my
Meredith Oke:thumbprint is going to be there on the glass, and
Meredith Oke:then I put the glass down and I look very, very
Meredith Oke:closely at the glass, I might be able to see my
Meredith Oke:fingerprint or my thumbprint if I know it's
Meredith Oke:there. But even knowing it's there, sometimes
Meredith Oke:it's really difficult to see. Unless, of course,
Meredith Oke:you're like a forensic scientist and sprinkle on
Meredith Oke:some fine powder, like, you know, like talcum
Meredith Oke:powder. Right.
Meredith Oke:Then, of course, on the crime shows where they.
Meredith Oke:Yeah, that's right.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Well, it's a little bit like that, Meredith,
Meredith Oke:with. With a sound print on water, on the surface
Meredith Oke:of water. Now, think of the surface of water like
Meredith Oke:a membrane, essentially, like. Like the glass.
Meredith Oke:You know, it's. It's. It's a way that we can
Meredith Oke:imprint vibrations, and in this case, we can make
Meredith Oke:them visible. Instead of sprinkling on talcum
Meredith Oke:powder, we actually use. We kind of dust the
Meredith Oke:surface of the water, you could say, with light,
Meredith Oke:special kind of light, and that's what makes the
Meredith Oke:imprint visible. So now we have a means of
Meredith Oke:literally being able to see sound. Now, you know,
Meredith Oke:the other aspect to cymatics and sound, the
Meredith Oke:physics of sound in general, that is not
Meredith Oke:particularly well known in the world, is that
Meredith Oke:sound waves do not actually exist. This is a
Meredith Oke:really strange situation where we have this term
Meredith Oke:sound waves. Everyone talks about sound waves,
Meredith Oke:including scientists, not me, but many scientists
Meredith Oke:do, you know, refer to sound waves, and we kind
Meredith Oke:of stuck with that term. So I. Nothing that I can
Meredith Oke:do to change that in the world of science,
Meredith Oke:excepting that when I teach the physics of sound,
Meredith Oke:which I do, then I make sure that all of my
Meredith Oke:students understand what is coming out of my
Meredith Oke:mouth now is not a wave. You know, if you were to
Meredith Oke:ask someone, Meredith, what's the shape of sound?
Meredith Oke:They will say, oh, it's a wave. And then if you
Meredith Oke:say to them, well, show me the shape of that
Meredith Oke:sound coming out of your mouth now, they will
Meredith Oke:mime something like this. You know, they will
Meredith Oke:show you a wiggle going through the air which is
Meredith Oke:completely Untrue. So what's coming out of my
Meredith Oke:mouth.
Meredith Oke:So what is it?
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: And a little bit out of my nose, because I don't
Meredith Oke:have a cold right now, is a bubble of sound. And
Meredith Oke:that bubble is oscillating in and out as it
Meredith Oke:expands at the speed of sound. And it's these
Meredith Oke:oscillations, these in and out oscillations or
Meredith Oke:pulsations, which are representing or indeed
Meredith Oke:relating to the vibrations of my vocal folds. So
Meredith Oke:as my vocal folds are vibrating, so obviously the
Meredith Oke:bubble is oscillating in and out with all of
Meredith Oke:those periodicities, all of those vibrations,
Meredith Oke:right, as it's expanding. And then when that
Meredith Oke:bubble impinges upon a membrane, say the surface
Meredith Oke:of water, such as in the Cymascope instrument, it
Meredith Oke:leaves an imprint, right? And it's a geometric
Meredith Oke:imprint. Because what you've done when doing
Meredith Oke:that, you've transposed sonic periodicities to
Meredith Oke:water wavelet periodicities. So you're literally
Meredith Oke:exchanging one form of matter for another, in a
Meredith Oke:sense, right? Because the matter, in this case in
Meredith Oke:air, the sound in air, is literally moving all
Meredith Oke:the molecules of the air, right? But as soon as
Meredith Oke:they imprint onto surface of water, then you're
Meredith Oke:exchanging those vibrations for movements in the
Meredith Oke:water. And these movements, these little ripples,
Meredith Oke:you could say, on the surface, become a model of
Meredith Oke:the sound made visible. We call it an analog. You
Meredith Oke:know, it's a model basically of the sound. So all
Meredith Oke:sounds are geometric in their form when they're
Meredith Oke:imprinted onto a membrane. And this bubble that's
Meredith Oke:coming out of my mouth now, when it imprints onto
Meredith Oke:the circular membrane in the cymascope
Meredith Oke:instrument, it becomes like a slice through the
Meredith Oke:sonic bubble. So what you see in cymoglyphs,
Meredith Oke:which is the word that I coined many, many years
Meredith Oke:ago simply to mean sound image, a cymoglyph is
Meredith Oke:essentially a slice through a cross section, if
Meredith Oke:you like, through the sonic bubble, Right? That's
Meredith Oke:what it is. So in other words, if you could see
Meredith Oke:the sound bubbles right now emerging from my
Meredith Oke:mouth, you would see these. This bubble with
Meredith Oke:beautiful patterns on its surface and right
Meredith Oke:through the bubble, not just on the surface, but
Meredith Oke:right away through the bubble. And then we take a
Meredith Oke:cross section with the instrument, with the
Meredith Oke:Cymascope instrument and show you those beautiful
Meredith Oke:patterns. And that brings me very nicely,
Meredith Oke:actually, on to talk about the new Cymascope app,
Meredith Oke:because we now do have a new version of the
Meredith Oke:Cymascope app, which I'm just about to show you
Meredith Oke:here.
Meredith Oke:That's really cool. So, because just to clarify
Meredith Oke:for everybody, you have invented oh, that's
Meredith Oke:amazing.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: That's your voice.
Meredith Oke:That's my voice. Oh, it looks so pretty. Oh, and
Meredith Oke:the laugh is different than the speaking. Oh my
Meredith Oke:gosh, this is so cool.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Yeah.
Meredith Oke:So for people on the audio version, John is
Meredith Oke:holding his phone up to his computer and he is
Meredith Oke:getting this cymatic imprint of my voice, which
Meredith Oke:changes with every, almost every breath, it seems
Meredith Oke:like.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Yeah. Because what it's doing, what it's doing,
Meredith Oke:Meredith, is it's sampling all of the frequencies
Meredith Oke:in your voice. Right. And it has what's termed a
Meredith Oke:fast Fourier transform analyzer. A little bit of
Meredith Oke:a mouthful in the background. You don't see it,
Meredith Oke:you know, it's working for you in the background.
Meredith Oke:And this FFT for short, analyzer, what its
Meredith Oke:purpose is to analyze the frequencies, in this
Meredith Oke:case in your voice or in my voice. And then it's
Meredith Oke:looking constantly for the dominant frequency.
Meredith Oke:What is the, what's the, the highest level of
Meredith Oke:energy, you know, within the frequencies of your
Meredith Oke:voice, say, or a musical instrument. It could be
Meredith Oke:a gong or a Tibetan bowl or a crystal bowl or a
Meredith Oke:tuning fork. Whatever it is, it's always looking
Meredith Oke:for that dominant frequency. And when it finds it
Meredith Oke:within a few milliseconds, literally, it then
Meredith Oke:puts that, the image of that frequency from a
Meredith Oke:Cymascope instrument, such as you see behind me
Meredith Oke:here, where all of those frequencies were imaged,
Meredith Oke:they are now stored in the app and displayed on
Meredith Oke:screen in almost real time. I mean, it's very
Meredith Oke:fast the way it does it. And so as you say, you
Meredith Oke:know, as your voice frequencies are changing up
Meredith Oke:and down, so that's looking for these dominant
Meredith Oke:frequencies and then immediately displaying them
Meredith Oke:within a fraction of a second on the screen. This
Meredith Oke:is really a wonderful tool for musicians, for
Meredith Oke:example, but basically anyone who's interested in
Meredith Oke:the science of sound and in the science of sound
Meredith Oke:from a healing perspective. The reason I say that
Meredith Oke:is. Well, there's a couple of reasons. The first
Meredith Oke:one is what I would refer to as Drishti
Meredith Oke:meditation. Are you familiar with that term?
Meredith Oke:No, I'm not.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Drishti is, is an Indian form of open eyed
Meredith Oke:meditation. You know, most meditations you would
Meredith Oke:have your eyes closed, but in Drishti meditation
Meredith Oke:you have them open. And usually you're focused on
Meredith Oke:something, say like a mandala that's been printed
Meredith Oke:and you put it on a wall and you focus your
Meredith Oke:attention on that. Right. So that's what Drishti
Meredith Oke:meditation is. Well, obviously, you know, with
Meredith Oke:the Cymascope app you can do exactly that. You
Meredith Oke:can focus on the sounds because there are always
Meredith Oke:going to be sounds in your room. Or you could be
Meredith Oke:making your own vocal sounds and again, focused
Meredith Oke:on that or another way you can do it is one of
Meredith Oke:the features of this app is that you can not only
Meredith Oke:record video of a given soundscape, but you can
Meredith Oke:also record still shots, still moments, right? So
Meredith Oke:let's say you make an Om sound, which is very
Meredith Oke:well known in the world of spirituality. You make
Meredith Oke:your Om up on the screen will come on your, your
Meredith Oke:iPhone or your, you know, tablet, whatever. Up on
Meredith Oke:the screen will come your version of your Om.
Meredith Oke:It'll be a little bit different for everyone, of
Meredith Oke:course, but it'll come up on the screen. Then you
Meredith Oke:press the camera button where there's like a
Meredith Oke:little icon of a camera that saves that image. It
Meredith Oke:goes straight into your. No, it doesn't go
Meredith Oke:straight into your photo album. There's a little
Meredith Oke:pop up that says, do you want to save this?
Meredith Oke:Right? So if you say, yes, I want to save it, it
Meredith Oke:will go straight into your photo album, you know,
Meredith Oke:on your phone or your tablet, right? You can then
Meredith Oke:print that out. So you can now print, you know, a
Meredith Oke:static copy of your Om, right? And put it on the
Meredith Oke:wall in front of you where you're going to be
Meredith Oke:meditating. And now, just like a mandala, you can
Meredith Oke:meditate on that image which was your own. All of
Meredith Oke:the frequencies that in your voice that created
Meredith Oke:that Om are now going to be visually there. Now,
Meredith Oke:the healing aspect of it, there's really twofold.
Meredith Oke:One is the meditative aspect, because when you
Meredith Oke:meditate, whether it be open eyed meditation or
Meredith Oke:closed eyes meditation, you go into a particular
Meredith Oke:mind state where the whole body goes into a
Meredith Oke:parasympathetic mode. So no longer any kind of
Meredith Oke:stress melts away. And you're now in an entirely
Meredith Oke:parasympathetic mode. When you're in that mode,
Meredith Oke:that's the mode where your body can heal. It
Meredith Oke:can't heal when it's in a sympathetic state. When
Meredith Oke:it's in sympathetic, you know, you're on the go,
Meredith Oke:you're busy doing whatever you're doing that's
Meredith Oke:sympathetic. But the parasympathetic is rest and
Meredith Oke:repair. And that's what happens when you go into
Meredith Oke:a meditation. So that would happen, obviously,
Meredith Oke:regardless of whether you have an open eyed
Meredith Oke:meditation or a closed eye. Right? It happens
Meredith Oke:either way. But now the other aspect to a Drishti
Meredith Oke:meditation, which may not be obvious to you, but
Meredith Oke:it's very patently obvious to me when light say
Meredith Oke:you've printed out this Om and you've put it on a
Meredith Oke:wall, right. When light illuminates, that light
Meredith Oke:could be sunlight. It could be, you know,
Meredith Oke:incandescent light coming from a light source in
Meredith Oke:your home or wherever it's coming from. It will
Meredith Oke:always have a significant component of infrared
Meredith Oke:energy, infrared light, which you can't see, but
Meredith Oke:nevertheless is present within the spectrum of
Meredith Oke:light. So we can only, as humans, of course, we
Meredith Oke:can only see the visible, what we call visible
Meredith Oke:spectrum of electromagnetism or light. But other
Meredith Oke:creatures can see in the infrared spectrum, and
Meredith Oke:even humans can to a very small degree. But
Meredith Oke:anyway, in this case, the reason I'm particularly
Meredith Oke:focused on this aspect of infrared light is
Meredith Oke:because when the infrared component illuminates
Meredith Oke:the cymoglyph and then reflects back out into the
Meredith Oke:room to you who is sitting there or meditating
Meredith Oke:there, right. What happens now is that the
Meredith Oke:vibrations that created that beautiful on
Meredith Oke:cymoglyph have now been modulated by those, by
Meredith Oke:that geometry, so that the light was steady state
Meredith Oke:in the first instance. It had no.
Meredith Oke:Okay, so if you're near an infrared light source,
Meredith Oke:it is reflecting back your own biogeometry.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: It is the important aspect to this, very
Meredith Oke:important to note that all the cells in your body
Meredith Oke:communicate with each other primarily in the near
Meredith Oke:infrared spectrum, right? That's how they send
Meredith Oke:information to one another. Right? So now you
Meredith Oke:understand that the light that's being the
Meredith Oke:infrared component, particularly the near
Meredith Oke:infrared, which is nearest to red, obviously that
Meredith Oke:near infrared component will penetrate deeply,
Meredith Oke:deep, I mean really deeply into your tissues and
Meredith Oke:communicate directly with your cells in the
Meredith Oke:medium of their own language, which is the near
Meredith Oke:infrared spectrum. Right? So now you're receiving
Meredith Oke:a healing. You're receiving a healing blessing
Meredith Oke:from your own.
Meredith Oke:Of your own imprint. So you know that it is.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Let's.
Meredith Oke:Let's just talk biogeometrically individualized
Meredith Oke:to you.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Yes. Now let's just switch away a little bit now
Meredith Oke:from that aspect of the cymatic aspect, the
Meredith Oke:Drishti meditation aspect of healing, to talk
Meredith Oke:about the. The healing aspect of your own vocal
Meredith Oke:apparatus, right? You're walking around with a
Meredith Oke:healing tool. We all are. If we have a normal
Meredith Oke:voice, and we're blessed to have a normal voice.
Meredith Oke:I know some people don't, but if we're blessed to
Meredith Oke:have a normal speaking voice, we are walking
Meredith Oke:around with a wonderful tool. Now, I'm not sure
Meredith Oke:whether we talked about this subject last time we
Meredith Oke:spoke, but I'd like to talk just briefly now, if
Meredith Oke:I may, about the vagus nerve in relation to our
Meredith Oke:own voice and to our hearing. Because there's a
Meredith Oke:really peculiar aspect to nature, the way nature
Meredith Oke:has worked. Well, it isn't really peculiar, but
Meredith Oke:it's really interesting. I'm going to share it
Meredith Oke:with you now. When the vagus nerve first leaves
Meredith Oke:the brainstem, you know, the vagus nerve is the
Meredith Oke:longest nerve in the body, leaves the brain stem.
Meredith Oke:It then connects with all the major organs in
Meredith Oke:your body. But before it goes down into the
Meredith Oke:thorax of your body, down your neck, both sides
Meredith Oke:of your neck, by the way, there's two branches of
Meredith Oke:it. Before, before it does that, the first place
Meredith Oke:it goes to is the tr. Is the, the pinner of your
Meredith Oke:ear. This is the. Sometimes called the oracle,
Meredith Oke:you know, the outer ear. Right. Nature took the
Meredith Oke:vagus nerve direct to the pinna of the ear. And
Meredith Oke:this is why if you touch your ear with your
Meredith Oke:finger, fingertips, you feel it's exquisitely
Meredith Oke:sensitive, right? And many people think of it as
Meredith Oke:an erogenous zone. Indeed it is, actually,
Meredith Oke:because it is so exquisitely sensitive to the
Meredith Oke:touch. And the lighter you touch your ears, the
Meredith Oke:more feeling you will, you will receive from
Meredith Oke:that, right? Now, why did nature, in evolutionary
Meredith Oke:terms going back many, many millions of years,
Meredith Oke:why did nature take the vagus nerve, the two
Meredith Oke:branches left and right, to the pinna of the ear?
Meredith Oke:Meredith, this is nothing to do with. With
Meredith Oke:hearing. This is not related to your hearing
Meredith Oke:system at all. Your hearing system, okay, you
Meredith Oke:still have these pinnas collecting sound from the
Meredith Oke:environment. Why? So that you can sense your
Meredith Oke:environment through sound vibrations. That's the
Meredith Oke:why. That's why nature arranged it that way. And
Meredith Oke:if you think about your. The pinna of your ears,
Meredith Oke:your outer ears being a little bit like parabolic
Meredith Oke:reflectors or in this case, dishes, that is
Meredith Oke:receiving the. Receiving sound from the
Meredith Oke:environment, right? That's really what they're
Meredith Oke:doing. That's why. And of course, you see, some
Meredith Oke:creatures have very big ears, you know, that's
Meredith Oke:because they're. They are even more dependent
Meredith Oke:upon having cues from nature to. For their
Meredith Oke:survival. So if you have bigger ears, you can
Meredith Oke:hear from a much farther distance. Right. In the
Meredith Oke:case of humans, we've got quite, you know,
Meredith Oke:modestly sized penners. But why did nature do
Meredith Oke:that? Well, I'm going to give you the answer now.
Meredith Oke:The answer is because the vagus nerve system is
Meredith Oke:exquisitely balanced and it needs to remain so.
Meredith Oke:Why? Because it innervates all of your major
Meredith Oke:organs. After it leaves the. After it leaves the
Meredith Oke:pinnas, it goes straight to the pharynx and, and
Meredith Oke:the larynx. And then when it leaves the Larynx,
Meredith Oke:it goes on to the lungs, the heart, the kidneys,
Meredith Oke:the liver, the pancreas and your gut. Everything,
Meredith Oke:basically, all of your major organs literally are
Meredith Oke:innovated, you know, connected to the brain via
Meredith Oke:this system. And that is why someone who even has
Meredith Oke:had a break in their spinal column, you know,
Meredith Oke:they've fallen off a horse or whatever and broken
Meredith Oke:their spinal cord as it is. That's why they can
Meredith Oke:go on living, that's why they can go on
Meredith Oke:breathing. Because the vagus nerve has taken over
Meredith Oke:from, you know, from the spinal nervous system,
Meredith Oke:basically, and carries. Is able to carry on the
Meredith Oke:life of the person. So coming back to the pinna
Meredith Oke:of the ears, the sound that enters your ears is
Meredith Oke:doing two things. One, it's going through the
Meredith Oke:auditory canal and into the cochlea so that you
Meredith Oke:can hear, right. Secondly, all of the vibrations
Meredith Oke:of nature, whether this is the siresm sound of
Meredith Oke:the wind and the trees, or birdsong, or the sound
Meredith Oke:of white water, rivers or waterfalls, or the
Meredith Oke:ocean waves crashing on the shore, whatever it
Meredith Oke:is, all of these different sounds of nature are
Meredith Oke:being collected by your pinnas and go straight
Meredith Oke:down into your vagus nerve system to keep it well
Meredith Oke:toned, because it is so important that it is well
Meredith Oke:toned. Right, so now you understand why I was
Meredith Oke:saying about the Om. Coming back to the Om when
Meredith Oke:you make an om sound, that's. Actually most
Meredith Oke:people will deliberately try to make the Om in a
Meredith Oke:low register because they know that it was a
Meredith Oke:primordial sound and it's intended to be of low
Meredith Oke:register. So even if you're a female, you will
Meredith Oke:make your lowest Om that you can, you know, with
Meredith Oke:your vocal apparatus, right? And as it turns out,
Meredith Oke:in all of the science that I've been conducting
Meredith Oke:for the last quarter of a century or more, it
Meredith Oke:turns out that all of the best healing
Meredith Oke:frequencies, almost all of them, are in the very,
Meredith Oke:very low registers. So when you make an om sound,
Meredith Oke:you are indeed making a healing sound. And that
Meredith Oke:sound, because your vocal apparatus is directly
Meredith Oke:innovated by the vagus nerve. Any sound that you
Meredith Oke:make, even now when you and I, we, we are
Meredith Oke:talking, all of those sound vibrations are
Meredith Oke:helping us to keep our vagal tone well toned,
Meredith Oke:well tuned up, right? And this kind of makes me
Meredith Oke:laugh in a way about, you know, people who talk a
Meredith Oke:lot and, and we, you know, we all. I'm sure we've
Meredith Oke:all met people who, you know, really. They have
Meredith Oke:kind of verbal diarrhea, you know, horrible term
Meredith Oke:anyway, you know, they just keep on talking. It's
Meredith Oke:actually very good for them, it's not so good if
Meredith Oke:you're the recipient, but it is actually.
Meredith Oke:That's interesting. It could be like a
Meredith Oke:compensatory mechanism of, if they're
Meredith Oke:dysregulated in their nervous system to keep that
Meredith Oke:vagal.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Yes. Possibly subliminal, subconsciously. Yes, I
Meredith Oke:guess that could be true, Meredith. I've never
Meredith Oke:really thought of it in those terms, but I think
Meredith Oke:it makes a lot of sense. And then, you know, just
Meredith Oke:listening to beautiful music. You mentioned
Meredith Oke:earlier in your introduction about, you know, the
Meredith Oke:list of albums that, by the way, I now have
Meredith Oke:expanded, that list of audio heterodyne Healing
Meredith Oke:albums. I'd be happy to send you the expanded
Meredith Oke:list so that you can.
Meredith Oke:Oh, wonderful. Yes.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Can look at more albums that, you know, can
Meredith Oke:decide whether they are right for them in terms
Meredith Oke:of the types of, you know, the genres of music
Meredith Oke:and so on. I even tested recently an album that I
Meredith Oke:had been wanting to reconnect with for a long,
Meredith Oke:long time. That's the Electric Light Orchestra. I
Meredith Oke:used to love their music and long time ago, 20
Meredith Oke:years ago. And so I decided I would buy, just
Meredith Oke:quite recently, would buy the album again, you
Meredith Oke:know, the greatest hits of the Electric Light
Meredith Oke:Orchestra. And when I did a session just last
Meredith Oke:month testing all of these different albums,
Meredith Oke:including that one, it turned out that that was
Meredith Oke:another album that I could add to the list.
Meredith Oke:Right. So just to recap for those people who are
Meredith Oke:listening for the first time about the audio
Meredith Oke:heterodyne phenomenon, this was a discovery of
Meredith Oke:mine more than two years ago now, entirely
Meredith Oke:accidental. And it related to. Well, we've just
Meredith Oke:been talking about the vagus nerve and how the.
Meredith Oke:It's very low frequencies that are optimal for
Meredith Oke:stimulation. You know, so the lower the
Meredith Oke:frequencies, even to some degree, the better.
Meredith Oke:And. And the researchers who have done most of
Meredith Oke:the work in this area, they're. They've
Meredith Oke:identified frequencies very low, like 5 Hz to 10
Meredith Oke:Hz being optimal for vagus nerve stimulation.
Meredith Oke:Now, that's below the range of human hearing. The
Meredith Oke:lowest range, lowest frequency a human can hear
Meredith Oke:is about 16 hertz. So talking 5 to 10 is not
Meredith Oke:something we can even hear. And yet it's.
Meredith Oke:Obviously, the researchers have discovered that
Meredith Oke:this is what provides the optimal stimulation.
Meredith Oke:So because the water in our body can hear it.
Meredith Oke:Well, feel it if we can't hear it with our ears,
Meredith Oke:but it's still having that cymatic effect on them.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Yeah. So how this. How this audio heterodyne
Meredith Oke:phenomenon or discovery came about was I had been
Meredith Oke:reading all of these research papers on the vagus
Meredith Oke:nerve and these very, very low frequencies.
Meredith Oke:Classed as extremely low frequencies. Elf.
Meredith Oke:Extremely low frequencies. And I had been. Well,
Meredith Oke:Annelise and I have an album, I think I mentioned
Meredith Oke:this to you last time, Dream of the Blue Whale,
Meredith Oke:which is in the list. And we listen to it quite
Meredith Oke:often at breakfast time, because it's just so
Meredith Oke:soothing, you know, when you. You're just waking
Meredith Oke:up and you're having your breakfast. Anyway, so I
Meredith Oke:thought, I wonder. This. This album is mimicking
Meredith Oke:essentially the sounds of blue whales, you know,
Meredith Oke:Anders Holt, who is the wonderful Danish
Meredith Oke:vocalist, accompanied by his lovely wife Kachina
Meredith Oke:on keyboards. They made this beautiful album. And
Meredith Oke:so I brought it down into the lab this day, more
Meredith Oke:than two years ago now, to test to see which
Meredith Oke:frequencies in Anda's voice. You know, what's the
Meredith Oke:best, the lowest frequencies that Anda Anders can
Meredith Oke:create. Now, you know, knowing full well that
Meredith Oke:even a bass vocalist, you know, the lowest bass
Meredith Oke:vocalist frequency would probably be 60 hertz on
Meredith Oke:a good day, right. As low as the lowest frequency
Meredith Oke:that a male bass vocalist can make. So I wasn't
Meredith Oke:expecting anything lower than that, for sure. But
Meredith Oke:when I looked at it on the lab spectrum analyzer,
Meredith Oke:but, boy, did I get a shock. A pleasant surprise,
Meredith Oke:because the 12 Hz band on the analyzer was
Meredith Oke:merrily dancing up and down with Anders voice.
Meredith Oke:Yes. And then there are times in this beautiful
Meredith Oke:album where Anders stop singing for a few moments
Meredith Oke:and the keyboards carry on. Beautiful, long,
Meredith Oke:gorgeous chords. And lo and behold, again I was
Meredith Oke:seeing the 12 Hz band dancing up and down. Now, I
Meredith Oke:was so surprised at this because I thought, wow,
Meredith Oke:how is this even possible? You know, the low. I
Meredith Oke:knew already in advance that the lowest note
Meredith Oke:possible for a male vocalist is 60, about 60
Meredith Oke:hertz. So this was a new phenomenon. And I
Meredith Oke:thought, wow. And I then went up into our home
Meredith Oke:and I brought down some more albums to test. And
Meredith Oke:most of when we listen to music at home, it's
Meredith Oke:almost always on cd. We just like the tactile
Meredith Oke:feeling of, you know, holding a disc and putting
Meredith Oke:it in the player and so on. Anyway, so I brought
Meredith Oke:down a whole bunch of CDs, and it turns out that
Meredith Oke:a very small percentage of them, just a few
Meredith Oke:percent, have this effect. Most of the albums do
Meredith Oke:not have this effect. And it's still a bit of a
Meredith Oke:mystery. We still don't know exactly how and why
Meredith Oke:in the mastering of albums. Some have it and some
Meredith Oke:don't. And we will get to the bottom of it
Meredith Oke:ultimately. But in the meantime, it means we have
Meredith Oke:this beautiful list of albums which do create
Meredith Oke:these very, very low frequencies. Now, you also
Meredith Oke:need to know that when the 12 Hz band on the
Meredith Oke:analyzer dances up and down, that there are
Meredith Oke:frequencies present down to 4 and 5 hertz. And
Meredith Oke:how we know that it's the lowest band on the
Meredith Oke:analyzer, on our analyzer, but how we know that
Meredith Oke:these other frequencies are present is because
Meredith Oke:the shape of the, what's termed the filter curve
Meredith Oke:on each band, each one sixth of an octave band in
Meredith Oke:the analyzer, the shape of it is like a bell jaw
Meredith Oke:shape. So it means that when it means 12 hertz is
Meredith Oke:like the center part of that, of that bell shape,
Meredith Oke:but you obviously got sidebands, and the lower
Meredith Oke:sideband will go down at least to 4 Hz. So this
Meredith Oke:is really exciting because 5 Hz is the optimal
Meredith Oke:frequency, it turns out, for vagal stimulation.
Meredith Oke:That's why we know that all of these albums carry
Meredith Oke:that potential. And the other aspect, you know,
Meredith Oke:to this, to vagal stimulation that is not, again,
Meredith Oke:not generally known or, well, not well known in
Meredith Oke:the world yet, but it will be known if I've got
Meredith Oke:anything to do with it, is that chronic
Meredith Oke:inflammation in the body is a precursor for so
Meredith Oke:many diseases that are incurable by mainstream
Meredith Oke:medicine. So I'm talking about cancer here. I'm
Meredith Oke:talking about diseases like fibromyalgia, for
Meredith Oke:example, where people are in extreme pain. And
Meredith Oke:there's nothing that the main, that mainstream
Meredith Oke:medicine can do to support someone like that.
Meredith Oke:There's no pill, there's no pharmacological
Meredith Oke:substance that you can take that will reverse
Meredith Oke:chronic inflammation. Right? Okay. If you have
Meredith Oke:extreme pain, they can give you pain relief, for
Meredith Oke:sure. Analgesics, they can even give you
Meredith Oke:prednisone and other drugs that will help to
Meredith Oke:mediate to some degree the chronic inflammation,
Meredith Oke:but nothing's going to cure it. However, other
Meredith Oke:groups of medical researchers have discovered
Meredith Oke:that optimal vagal stimulation via the pinna of
Meredith Oke:the ears can indeed reverse chronic inflammation.
Meredith Oke:Right. And when you know that chronic
Meredith Oke:inflammation is a precursor to cancer, there are
Meredith Oke:just, there are studies that show that if you
Meredith Oke:optimally stimulate, if you have cancer and you
Meredith Oke:optimally stimulate your vagal system, then your
Meredith Oke:prognosis is going to be improved by about 50%,
Meredith Oke:5, 0%. Right. So this is really important stuff
Meredith Oke:now when it comes to. How do you do this? Okay,
Meredith Oke:you get the list of albums. This is great. Get
Meredith Oke:the list of albums, and you, you either pick with
Meredith Oke:a pin or you pick with your heart or a pendulum
Meredith Oke:or however you're going to decide you know, which
Meredith Oke:albums to buy. But then the next part of the
Meredith Oke:situation is you must listen, you must experience
Meredith Oke:this music, any of these albums through good
Meredith Oke:quality headphones. These have to be capable of
Meredith Oke:reproducing frequencies down to 5 Hz. Now, most
Meredith Oke:headsets don't.
Meredith Oke:So if they're not good quality enough, you're not
Meredith Oke:going to get.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: You're not going to get the healing.
Meredith Oke:Benefit, the resonance that you need to.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Have the healing effect. But there are.
Meredith Oke:And what about with no headphones? Can you do it
Meredith Oke:with your speakers or.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Of course, you know, if you, if you're immersed
Meredith Oke:in a sound bath situation or even just know,
Meredith Oke:speakers at home will provide some degree of
Meredith Oke:vagal stimulation. You know, we talked earlier,
Meredith Oke:didn't we, about how nature arranged this so that
Meredith Oke:the pinner of the ears is the means, like the
Meredith Oke:parabolic dishes that are collecting sounds from
Meredith Oke:nature, not only so that we can hear, but also to
Meredith Oke:help vagal tone, to support vagal tone. So, yes,
Meredith Oke:you will receive some healing blessing from any
Meredith Oke:sounds in the environment, whether they be a gong
Meredith Oke:bath, you know, a crystal bowl bath, you know,
Meredith Oke:any kind of live music, wonderful recorded music
Meredith Oke:from speakers. Yes, all of those things will to
Meredith Oke:some degree support vagal tone, but not
Meredith Oke:necessarily optimally. To have optimal
Meredith Oke:stimulation, the Researchers have discovered 5
Meredith Oke:hertz to 10 hertz is needed. Right. And that's
Meredith Oke:where this audio heterodyne discovery comes in.
Meredith Oke:So what's this word, heterodyne? It basically
Meredith Oke:means to mix frequencies together to create new
Meredith Oke:frequencies. Now, the word is used a lot in the
Meredith Oke:electronics industry. It's very common because in
Meredith Oke:radio communications and other forms of
Meredith Oke:telecommunications, it's used all of the time for
Meredith Oke:mixing frequencies together to create new
Meredith Oke:frequencies. But in the audio world, it's not
Meredith Oke:known. And this was a really peculiar discovery,
Meredith Oke:you know, that I made because I had been in sound
Meredith Oke:all of my life, right? And I didn't know about
Meredith Oke:this. This phenomenon in nature. And nobody else
Meredith Oke:did either, by the way, because after making the
Meredith Oke:discovery, I then reached out to many different
Meredith Oke:colleagues that I have known around the world.
Meredith Oke:You know, acousticians, acoustics engineers and
Meredith Oke:so on. Sound engineers. Nobody knew about this
Meredith Oke:phenomenon. So it's really peculiar.
Meredith Oke:That phenomenon being the very, very low.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Frequencies, the creation of low Vs. Extremely
Meredith Oke:low frequencies in real time. So let's be clear
Meredith Oke:about this, Meredith. They are not on the album.
Meredith Oke:None of these albums contain these low
Meredith Oke:frequencies. Right. And how we know that.
Meredith Oke:Oh.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Is because.
Meredith Oke:So it's not on the recording, but it is when you
Meredith Oke:turn on the cymascope you're capturing them in
Meredith Oke:the playing.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: When you play it is when. Yeah, it's only when
Meredith Oke:you play it.
Meredith Oke:Okay, now I understand the mystery a little
Meredith Oke:better.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: What's happening?
Meredith Oke:Wow.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: In the studio, when they master an album, they
Meredith Oke:roll off. They call it roll off all the
Meredith Oke:frequencies below 20 hertz deliberately. And the
Meredith Oke:reason they do that, Meredith, is because speaker
Meredith Oke:systems in particular, cannot handle these really
Meredith Oke:low frequencies. In fact, if you put these really
Meredith Oke:low frequencies, if you inject them into a
Meredith Oke:speaker system, the cone of the speaker flaps
Meredith Oke:about. It doesn't like them. It can't handle
Meredith Oke:them. Right. So this is why it's deliberately
Meredith Oke:mastered in that way. So every. That's how I know
Meredith Oke:none of these albums have frequencies below 20
Meredith Oke:hertz. So this was the big surprise. Right. So
Meredith Oke:what happens is the mixing, this heterodyning, as
Meredith Oke:it's called heterodyning, happens not in sound,
Meredith Oke:but in the electrical domain. If you think about
Meredith Oke:a CD player, compact disc player, or think about
Meredith Oke:a digital media player, it will have an output
Meredith Oke:usually there. If they're a discrete player, it
Meredith Oke:will have literally two RCA connectors or
Meredith Oke:something on the back. Right. That then connect
Meredith Oke:into your amplification system, whether that be,
Meredith Oke:you know, a stereo system or whatever. Right. So
Meredith Oke:where this magic happens is in the electrical
Meredith Oke:signal path after it leaves the CD player or
Meredith Oke:leaves the digital media player. It happens in
Meredith Oke:the electrical domain, not sound. So all of the
Meredith Oke:signals from the CD player or the digital media
Meredith Oke:player, after it comes out of the laser, say in a
Meredith Oke:CD player. Right. For example, it then goes
Meredith Oke:through a process of digital to audio
Meredith Oke:transposition. So it becomes audio. But an audio
Meredith Oke:signal is not sound. You know, audio is an
Meredith Oke:electrical signal that obviously represents the
Meredith Oke:sound. It's, you know, it's sympathetic
Meredith Oke:sympathize with the sound, but it's not sound.
Meredith Oke:It's electrical. These are electrical signals in
Meredith Oke:that signal path. It doesn't become sound until
Meredith Oke:it eventually goes through an amplifier and into
Meredith Oke:a speaker system or into headphones. Then it is
Meredith Oke:transposed into sound. So these frequencies that
Meredith Oke:I'm referring to, these heterodyne frequencies,
Meredith Oke:or mixing and creating new frequencies in the
Meredith Oke:electrical domain. Right. And then they go
Meredith Oke:through the amplification and ultimately through
Meredith Oke:the speaker system or in this case, through
Meredith Oke:headphones, and become literally sound that you
Meredith Oke:hear, or sound, in the case of these very low
Meredith Oke:frequencies, you don't hear them, but your vagus
Meredith Oke:nerve system will thank you for them. It will
Meredith Oke:experience this optimal stimulation that it
Meredith Oke:apparently needs, you know, to be properly well
Meredith Oke:tuned, as it were. So it's a very exciting
Meredith Oke:discovery and where I'm hoping this will go
Meredith Oke:eventually is it will eventually find itself in
Meredith Oke:clinical environments. Because I would love to
Meredith Oke:see situation where there's a clinical version of
Meredith Oke:this very simple technology really where people
Meredith Oke:in hospitals that are, you know, perhaps
Meredith Oke:particularly long stay patients in hospitals are
Meredith Oke:going to receive this vagal, optimal vagal
Meredith Oke:stimulation. So let's just back up and talk a
Meredith Oke:little bit about these headphones. Because if you
Meredith Oke:don't have the right headphones, as you were
Meredith Oke:saying.
Meredith Oke:And also I wanted to know if it works off of a
Meredith Oke:streaming, if you're streaming the music or does
Meredith Oke:it have to be from a physical disc playing.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Yeah, I hear what you say. So. Well, in terms of
Meredith Oke:streaming, unfortunately most music that you will
Meredith Oke:receive via say YouTube or you know, any other
Meredith Oke:platform is compressed, heavily compressed. This
Meredith Oke:means that it's not high quality. You know, to
Meredith Oke:get the results that we're referring to here, the
Meredith Oke:healing blessing, you really need WAV files. Now
Meredith Oke:when you download music digitally from, from
Meredith Oke:online, most of the music that you will Download
Meredith Oke:would be MP3, for example, would be a very. Which
Meredith Oke:heavily compressed. This means a lot of the data
Meredith Oke:is missing from that. And we as humans
Meredith Oke:unfortunately have come to come to accept this
Meredith Oke:very poor version of music that we experience.
Meredith Oke:We've got used to it. It's not until you actually
Meredith Oke:do a direct comparison with MP3 versus WAV files,
Meredith Oke:for example, or FLAC files that you then go. If
Meredith Oke:you have a direct comparison where you have two
Meredith Oke:speakers and one, you know, one plays or two
Meredith Oke:speaker systems and one's playing MP3 and then
Meredith Oke:suddenly you turn a switch and it goes to wave.
Meredith Oke:Oh, immediately you notice the difference. Wow,
Meredith Oke:this is so much nicer. You see. But generally
Meredith Oke:people just get used to this, you know, very poor
Meredith Oke:compression, MP3 compression. So no, it won't
Meredith Oke:provide the optimal results.
Meredith Oke:You must, you really, you want to choose your
Meredith Oke:music and then order.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: That whoever you like. Say for example. Yeah, if
Meredith Oke:you think about, we were talking about Dream of
Meredith Oke:the Blue Whale there. Anders Holt, you know

Meredith Oke:going for digital downloads. Well, the standard
Meredith Oke:digital download from Anders Holt and from most
Meredith Oke:suppliers of music is MP3. But if you ask Anders
Meredith Oke:for the WAV files version, he will supply it.
Meredith Oke:Right. And that's also true of most music. Most
Meredith Oke:indie music, for example, you can buy it as WAV
Meredith Oke:files or FLAC files, which is another form of
Meredith Oke:audio.
Meredith Oke:So you really want to make sure that you, if
Meredith Oke:you're going to do the downloaded version.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Yeah, if you want, you have to have this very
Meredith Oke:high quality. And the other thing you have to do
Meredith Oke:is to listen only through high quality
Meredith Oke:headphones. So earbuds, these little earbuds,
Meredith Oke:they won't cut it. No, they, they fall off at
Meredith Oke:20Hz. Bone conduction headphones, they won't cut
Meredith Oke:it. They fall off at 20Hz. Right. Or not even
Meredith Oke:higher then. If you talk about Bluetooth
Meredith Oke:headphones, they won't cut it. So any wireless,
Meredith Oke:Any wireless.
Meredith Oke:My audience doesn't do Bluetooth headphones. They

Meredith Oke:headphones. And even when you buy cord attached,
Meredith Oke:you must look for the frequency response,
Meredith Oke:published frequency response, and make sure it
Meredith Oke:starts at either 4 hertz or 5 hertz. Then you
Meredith Oke:know you're going to get the very, very best

Meredith Oke:headphones will be published at 20Hz starting

Meredith Oke:check to make sure it's five. And you need to
Meredith Oke:make sure the source of the sound or the music is
Meredith Oke:high quality, is high quality and not a
Meredith Oke:compressed file. I'm so interested in this
Meredith Oke:compressed audio because it's, it's reminding me
Meredith Oke:of like our LED light bulbs where we've just, we
Meredith Oke:keep kind of compressing everything to what we
Meredith Oke:think is just the stuff we need. And we're
Meredith Oke:leaving out so many things so much across the
Meredith Oke:spectrum that our biology really needs, whether
Meredith Oke:it's light or sound or anything else so
Meredith Oke:interesting. Is there for headphones, is there a

Meredith Oke:ballpark, somewhere around there in that range.
Meredith Oke:So it's really good value when you think what
Meredith Oke:healing you're going to get from these headphones.
Meredith Oke:Yes. If you're for that healing mechanism, it's
Meredith Oke:like, absolutely. So, okay, so we'll have one
Meredith Oke:more question because before you have one, before.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: You must talk about the ohmic value. This is the
Meredith Oke:resistance of the headphones to a signal. So when
Meredith Oke:you look at the model DT770, it's available in
Meredith Oke:several different ohmic values. It's available in
Meredith Oke:32 ohms. That is only for PCs, Android devices,
Meredith Oke:stereo systems. If you have an Apple product, you
Meredith Oke:go for the 88.0ohm model, right? If so, any Apple
Meredith Oke:device, it could be an Apple iPhone, ipod, iPad,
Meredith Oke:or, you know, imac computer. Any of Those is the
Meredith Oke:80 ohm. And then you'll also see a 250 ohm. They
Meredith Oke:are only for professional recording studios, so
Meredith Oke:forget that one. But then you'll also see another
Meredith Oke:model which is DT770 Pro X and the X is 48 ohm.
Meredith Oke:And that is universally acceptable for Android
Meredith Oke:and Apple products. So the X is a kind of special
Meredith Oke:edition that they've just brought out. I don't
Meredith Oke:know how long it's going to be there, but, you
Meredith Oke:know, if you go for the X, it means you can, you
Meredith Oke:can use it on any, any device, basically. So.

Meredith Oke:Got it. All right, so we're all. We're squared
Meredith Oke:away to make sure we have the ideal headphones to
Meredith Oke:hear those lower frequencies which we require for
Meredith Oke:our vagal toning. What about. So I have a teenage
Meredith Oke:daughter and they are all. They're all back into
Meredith Oke:vinyl. So we have a record player in Our living
Meredith Oke:room. What about listening to record players?
Meredith Oke:Does that have the effect? Is that even better
Meredith Oke:than CDs?
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: No, it's not. It's not even better. And because,
Meredith Oke:you know, there are some limitations even with
Meredith Oke:vinyl, however, I would say it's certainly equal
Meredith Oke:to cd, CD quality. And you know, it's analog, of
Meredith Oke:course, which is a wonderful thing. So there's
Meredith Oke:no, no chopping up at all. But there's still some
Meredith Oke:limitations because you, you are literally
Meredith Oke:talking about a stylus wiggling its way through a
Meredith Oke:groove, you know, so there are still some
Meredith Oke:limitations. But if you get really, a really high
Meredith Oke:quality pickup cartridge, you know, they have to
Meredith Oke:be high quality. Again, it's the same as like
Meredith Oke:when you buy any stereo equipment, it should be
Meredith Oke:high quality if you want to get the best results.
Meredith Oke:And the same is true of pickup cartridges. So
Meredith Oke:again, you can look at the frequency response
Meredith Oke:that's published for pickup cartridges. There are
Meredith Oke:so many really cheap vinyl players now coming
Meredith Oke:out, you know, manufacturers jumping on the
Meredith Oke:bandwagon because vinyl starting to come back. So
Meredith Oke:you've got to beware a little bit, you know, when
Meredith Oke:you're doing your buying. But the best quality
Meredith Oke:vinyl records for sure, equal and some extent
Meredith Oke:even exceed CD quality. But you've got to then
Meredith Oke:only get the very, very best, of course.
Meredith Oke:Okay, so it all. So the quality matters. So vinyl
Meredith Oke:CDs, WAV files, and make sure we have the right
Meredith Oke:headphones that are capturing those lower
Meredith Oke:frequencies.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Absolutely.
Meredith Oke:I want to, and I do. I think we. So we talked
Meredith Oke:about this on our last interview, but when you
Meredith Oke:explained about those lower frequencies and the
Meredith Oke:vagal tone and how it oxygenates the blood, I was
Meredith Oke:reminded. I know, I know, I know, I know. We're
Meredith Oke:just keeping. I know. There's so many details.
Meredith Oke:And I jumped to a completely different topic
Meredith Oke:there with the oxygenation. But that is an effect
Meredith Oke:that is also happening.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Yeah, no, not when you listen to headphones. And
Meredith Oke:this is the, you know, the.
Meredith Oke:Okay, not through headphones.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: My vision.
Meredith Oke:Okay, good.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: To clarify my vision for the future in hospital
Meredith Oke:environments and clinical environments is that
Meredith Oke:patients would receive music, experience music
Meredith Oke:through high quality headphones, just as we've
Meredith Oke:been talking right about. But in addition to
Meredith Oke:that, they would receive the same music, at least
Meredith Oke:the, the bass register of that same music through
Meredith Oke:tactile transducers that are embedded into the
Meredith Oke:mattress, the substrate of the bed that they're
Meredith Oke:lying in right now. The reason for that is
Meredith Oke:because these tactile transducers can go down to
Meredith Oke:5 hertz very, very easily. Right Unlike speakers,
Meredith Oke:you know, speaker, as we were talking earlier,
Meredith Oke:most speakers, when they're getting down to 25
Meredith Oke:hertz, they're starting to not feel very
Meredith Oke:comfortable. The cone starts to flap around quite
Meredith Oke:a lot. Even big, big, big woofer speakers don't
Meredith Oke:like anything lower than about 25 hertz. But
Meredith Oke:tactile transducers is a different style of
Meredith Oke:transducer that can go right down to 5 hertz. So
Meredith Oke:if you had a hospital bed in which were embedded
Meredith Oke:these tactile transducers, it would mean that
Meredith Oke:this music that the patient is experiencing
Meredith Oke:through the high quality headphones is
Meredith Oke:simultaneously experiencing through the base
Meredith Oke:register, is coming up through the mattress into
Meredith Oke:their body, basically. And what that does, as we
Meredith Oke:talked about last time, it's causing oxygen
Meredith Oke:that's dissolved in the bloodstream of the
Meredith Oke:patient to bind more efficiently to the
Meredith Oke:hemoglobin molecules in the red blood cells. In
Meredith Oke:other words, it's helping the oxygenation level
Meredith Oke:of the patient, which without them having to do
Meredith Oke:anything. Right. I mean, basically, you know, the
Meredith Oke:whole point of the heart is to circulate the
Meredith Oke:blood primarily, but the secondary aspect of the
Meredith Oke:heart is to create pressure pulses which we call
Meredith Oke:heartbeats. Right. These pressure pulses are low
Meredith Oke:frequency sound that literally causes the oxygen.
Meredith Oke:It's one of the mechanisms that causes the oxygen
Meredith Oke:dissolved in the bloodstream from your
Meredith Oke:respiration to bind to the hemoglobin and
Meredith Oke:therefore bring healing oxygen to all of the
Meredith Oke:tissues of your body. Now, if you're in a, if
Meredith Oke:you're prone, if you're supine, rather in a
Meredith Oke:hospital bed, and you are, perhaps you've got
Meredith Oke:weak respiration, you, perhaps you've got weak
Meredith Oke:heart. Right. Then you are at risk, obviously. I
Meredith Oke:know that. Okay, okay. They can give you oxygen
Meredith Oke:through a candula or whatever, you know, they can
Meredith Oke:give you additional oxygen. But here's a way,
Meredith Oke:another way for you to improve the efficiency of
Meredith Oke:absorption of oxygen in your body. And oxygen is
Meredith Oke:the key healing molecule. It's needed for all of
Meredith Oke:the healing mechanisms, almost all of the healing
Meredith Oke:mechanisms in your body. So you need a good
Meredith Oke:supply of oxygen to heal, basically. Therefore,
Meredith Oke:if you were experiencing music, not only would
Meredith Oke:you, through these good quality headphones
Meredith Oke:simultaneously through the tactile transducers in
Meredith Oke:the bed. Wow. You would really support the
Meredith Oke:healing of that patient. And that's the vision
Meredith Oke:that I have for the future, you know, of
Meredith Oke:frequency medicine in the clinical environment.

Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: No, but you know that this is. It is a bit of a
Meredith Oke:challenge to be able to communicate the science
Meredith Oke:of frequency medicine to mainstream clinicians
Meredith Oke:who have got.
Meredith Oke:That's why we're all here, John. That's why the
Meredith Oke:QVC podcast exists. We're gonna do it. I believe
Meredith Oke:in us. I believe in you. You are going to make
Meredith Oke:this a little more mainstream.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: I was just talking.
Meredith Oke:Yes.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: I was just talking yesterday about with a
Meredith Oke:university in the US teaching university, who
Meredith Oke:have a med school, and for the first time,
Meredith Oke:they're going to be teaching nutrition. Meredith.
Meredith Oke:Now, what do you think of that? You know, lo and
Meredith Oke:behold, you know that. That good nutrition
Meredith Oke:actually helps to heal the body. Well, what a
Meredith Oke:surprise.
Meredith Oke:You know, we're here talking about low, lower
Meredith Oke:frequency and frequency and they're like,
Meredith Oke:actually, if you eat real food. Yeah, that's
Meredith Oke:where they're at.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: You know, a long time ago, I think it's going
Meredith Oke:back almost 20 years now, in the UK, there was a
Meredith Oke:wonderful program. I'm not sure, I don't think it
Meredith Oke:was on BBC in my memory. I think it was a
Meredith Oke:commercial program channel. But anyway, this, it
Meredith Oke:was called the, the Food Hospital. It wasn't
Meredith Oke:literally a hospital, it was a program, but it
Meredith Oke:just had that title. Right. But what they. Anyone
Meredith Oke:who came into this program for healing had to be
Meredith Oke:someone who had gone the mainstream route that
Meredith Oke:been to their GP or their hospital, you know, for
Meredith Oke:whatever problem they had, and they had given
Meredith Oke:them all of the, you know, standard protocols and
Meredith Oke:it had not helped. So this was the kind of. These
Meredith Oke:were the people who could not be helped. And then
Meredith Oke:they came to this program, the Food Hospital. And
Meredith Oke:in every single case, these people were healed,
Meredith Oke:were cured of whatever their malady was, right?
Meredith Oke:Every single case. Just through high quality
Meredith Oke:nutrition. Very, very targeted nutrition, by the
Meredith Oke:way, not just, you know, average nutrition, but
Meredith Oke:targeted very carefully. And yet. And then after
Meredith Oke:I, I don't know how many months of this beautiful
Meredith Oke:program, they discontinued it. Now, I always
Meredith Oke:wondered about that. Who pulled the plug on this
Meredith Oke:program and why, when all of these people were
Meredith Oke:being helped, Right? And then it also makes me
Meredith Oke:question, why do med schools not teach nutrition?
Meredith Oke:Why? What is the reason behind that? Well, you
Meredith Oke:know, perhaps this university in the US I better
Meredith Oke:not name them right now, but because, you know, I
Meredith Oke:don't know where they're headed with this. But
Meredith Oke:perhaps this university in the US who is
Meredith Oke:beginning to teach in the med school section,
Meredith Oke:beginning to teach nutrition. Perhaps that will
Meredith Oke:be the beginning, Meredith, of the snowball that
Meredith Oke:gradually gathers and other med schools will.
Meredith Oke:Will take heed and say, oh, I think we should add
Meredith Oke:nutrition. You know, I mean, it's crazy situation
Meredith Oke:when high quality nutrition is needed by the body
Meredith Oke:for all the healing processes. So it's really
Meredith Oke:amazing.
Meredith Oke:Yeah, no, it's crazy. And they don't even study
Meredith Oke:nutrition, let alone, you know, and you, you
Meredith Oke:know, you mentioned how difficult it is to. To
Meredith Oke:translate frequency medicine and frequency
Meredith Oke:science into mainstream. And it's like, why is
Meredith Oke:that so hard? Like, why are they not. Why is the
Meredith Oke:foundation not being laid for that? Because the
Meredith Oke:stepping stones to understand through all the
Meredith Oke:different mechanisms are there.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Yes. And also, Meredith.
Meredith Oke:So I'm not gonna. I'm not gonna posit an answer
Meredith Oke:to that.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: No.
Meredith Oke:But it's rhetorically easier.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: In fact, you know, recently I was teaching.
Meredith Oke:Teaching. I am still teaching a course with SHIFT
Meredith Oke:Network. And I wanted to be able to share with
Meredith Oke:the students in this course the what. What. What
Meredith Oke:AI thinks about this situation with mainstream.
Meredith Oke:And, you know, where are they headed with it
Meredith Oke:with. In terms of alternative technologies such
Meredith Oke:as light and sound, for example. And so I asked
Meredith Oke:the question of AI, and this particular AI that I
Meredith Oke:asked came back with a wonderful expose of how
Meredith Oke:mainstream medicine is gradually moving toward a
Meredith Oke:holistic. A more holistic view. And I thought,
Meredith Oke:wow, this is really amazing. So, because when you
Meredith Oke:think about it, Meredith, AI is basically is the
Meredith Oke:mainstream view. It's gathering. You know, this
Meredith Oke:is a computer system that's gathering data from
Meredith Oke:all around the world, basically. But it's a
Meredith Oke:mainstream view that it's giving you. It'll never
Meredith Oke:give you anything alternative. Well, not
Meredith Oke:generally, anyway. And so I was really excited to
Meredith Oke:see this. But then also other information which
Meredith Oke:gives me support for this idea is the fact that
Meredith Oke:if you go to your doctor with some kind of a skin
Meredith Oke:condition and they refer you to a hospital, for
Meredith Oke:example, to a, you know, dermatology department,
Meredith Oke:they will give you light therapy. You usually
Meredith Oke:call it phototherapy in a hospital setting, or
Meredith Oke:photobiomodulation, which is a branch of
Meredith Oke:frequency medicine. Right. It's light.
Meredith Oke:Indeed. Yeah.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: It's not a drug.
Meredith Oke:I mean, if. If you're lucky to get a hospital
Meredith Oke:that does that. Yes, yeah, most of them do.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: And. And then the other aspect to this, which
Meredith Oke:again gives me heart, is this new clinical term,
Meredith Oke:music medicine. This is a new clinical term.
Meredith Oke:Right. So it's not.
Meredith Oke:I Didn't realize that music therapy, you.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Know, music therapy has been around since the
Meredith Oke:1950s, I would say, and it's still, you know,
Meredith Oke:very much, very strong therapy today where you
Meredith Oke:have a qualified therapist who will sit with a
Meredith Oke:patient and help the patient make music choices.
Meredith Oke:And it's a kind of, it's also a psychological,
Meredith Oke:it's a talk therapy as well as music. Right. But
Meredith Oke:now, lo and behold, Meredith, they have
Meredith Oke:discovered that music has healing qualities even
Meredith Oke:without the therapist. Right. And this is really
Meredith Oke:good news. And they've added this new clinical
Meredith Oke:term, music medicine. So you won't find every
Meredith Oke:clinician talking about it yet. But again, it's a
Meredith Oke:snowball that has begun and it will grow with
Meredith Oke:time. And so, and there are many studies now, you
Meredith Oke:know, evidence based medicine showing that music
Meredith Oke:has therapeutic qualities. Right.
Meredith Oke:Wonderful.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: It is wonderful.
Meredith Oke:Yes, though I, it. And it's, you know, what I
Meredith Oke:love about it too is it's fun, right? Like go
Meredith Oke:outside and sit under a tree. It's. That's
Meredith Oke:healthy for you. And listen to these, to the
Meredith Oke:sounds of nature and listen to music. And it, it
Meredith Oke:doesn't have to be terribly complicated. And
Meredith Oke:these are things we can do ourselves because as
Meredith Oke:you mentioned, you know, you go to so many people
Meredith Oke:are in that gray area where they go to their GP
Meredith Oke:and they're not in a crisis and the gp, you know,
Meredith Oke:there's no real answer in mainstream medicine
Meredith Oke:because. And yet their quality of life is
Meredith Oke:suffering to some extent. And so I love to be
Meredith Oke:able to share these beautiful, all of these
Meredith Oke:beautiful things that we can do that we're meant
Meredith Oke:to be doing. And, and I have an, one last
Meredith Oke:question around all this. So in the last
Meredith Oke:conversation when I was, I was reminded of an
Meredith Oke:experience I had with my third pregnancy where I
Meredith Oke:was due to go into labor, but I wasn't going into
Meredith Oke:labor. And I attended a family drum night at my
Meredith Oke:children's school. So I was in a room with this
Meredith Oke:big circle of drummers and that night I went into
Meredith Oke:labor. And so after you talked about the effect
Meredith Oke:of sound on the body, I thought, oh, maybe that
Meredith Oke:was a connection. And I'm wondering too about
Meredith Oke:live music because that, as you said, as the, the
Meredith Oke:you know, popularity of compressed streaming
Meredith Oke:music, you know, that's basically all anyone
Meredith Oke:listens to, especially the kids, because they all
Meredith Oke:listen to it on their phones. But in parallel to
Meredith Oke:that, there is a huge increase in young people
Meredith Oke:going to live music like these, like local
Meredith Oke:concerts, big, big concert, all of them. They
Meredith Oke:sell out every time, all the time. Like the
Meredith Oke:children the young people are just desperate to
Meredith Oke:like get in front of the music and the musicians.
Meredith Oke:So what's the, what's the impact of being there
Meredith Oke:in the room with the instruments and the singers?
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Wow. It's a really wonderful impact because of
Meredith Oke:course, the, the, there are, there is no chopping
Meredith Oke:up, you know, no digital chopping up. You see,
Meredith Oke:you get the real music from the instruments.
Meredith Oke:Well, via the amplification system, of course,
Meredith Oke:but these amplification systems are extremely
Meredith Oke:high fidelity. So you're going to get absolutely
Meredith Oke:superb massage and all of the benefits from the
Meredith Oke:music that you could possibly receive. Because,
Meredith Oke:you know, the, you know, we've talked today about
Meredith Oke:oxygen binding that happens with the low
Meredith Oke:frequencies. We've talked about the vagus nerve
Meredith Oke:system getting a good tune up, you know, via the
Meredith Oke:pinna of the ears. But we haven't talked about
Meredith Oke:nitric oxide. And nitric oxide is another
Meredith Oke:wonderful molecule in the body that it's not as
Meredith Oke:important, let's say, as oxygen, but it's second
Meredith Oke:important, second in importance. And that's
Meredith Oke:created through resonance in the paranasal sinus
Meredith Oke:cavities and in the lungs. So you won't get it
Meredith Oke:through listening to music through headphones.
Meredith Oke:You get all the other, excuse me, you get all the
Meredith Oke:other benefits. But you will get, if you go to a
Meredith Oke:music concert, you can imagine your paranasal
Meredith Oke:sinus cavities. Excuse me, I'll just have a
Meredith Oke:little drink here.

Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Your parent, your paranasal sinus cavities will
Meredith Oke:get a good, really good stimulation where the
Meredith Oke:nitric oxide is created. Oodles and oodles of

Meredith Oke:but. But, you know, it's not necessarily in many
Meredith Oke:cases, and in this case, there are a few aspects
Meredith Oke:of the app that I thought, well, I better do a
Meredith Oke:little demo. And in this demo, one of the aspects
Meredith Oke:I talk about, Meredith, is when you make a video
Meredith Oke:because you can press a record button within the
Meredith Oke:app. And so if you're making vocal sounds or
Meredith Oke:musical instrument sounds and you're seeing all
Meredith Oke:this gorgeous imagery coming up, you. You can
Meredith Oke:record that. Well, let's say you go to a Taylor
Meredith Oke:Swift concert, or let's say you're downloading or
Meredith Oke:you're listening to some Taylor Swift Music on
Meredith Oke:YouTube just as an example. Right. And you are
Meredith Oke:making visible some of Taylor Swift's beautiful
Meredith Oke:vocals and the instrumentals that go with it. And
Meredith Oke:then let's say you would post that video on, you
Meredith Oke:know, tik tok or YouTube or, you know, wherever.
Meredith Oke:Instagram. Can you imagine the consequences of
Meredith Oke:that? You know, of you recording some of Taylor
Meredith Oke:Swift's music and making it visible and then
Meredith Oke:posting that online? Oh, my goodness, you would
Meredith Oke:be in so much trouble. Right. So this is why in
Meredith Oke:the app, when you press the record button, the
Meredith Oke:first thing that happens is there's a popup note,
Meredith Oke:a warning notice telling you only use your own
Meredith Oke:music, you know?
Meredith Oke:Yes.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Not Taylor Swift's or anybody else's, because
Meredith Oke:that's copyright. You cannot do it. If you did
Meredith Oke:it, you would get into a lot of trouble.
Meredith Oke:A lot of trouble. Yes. I've recently become
Meredith Oke:deeply familiar with the community guidelines on
Meredith Oke:YouTube. And copyright infringement is a
Meredith Oke:deletable offense. You will get kicked off right
Meredith Oke:away.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Be so careful.
Meredith Oke:Yes. No, you do. But that's. That's amazing to
Meredith Oke:hear about the. The live aspect. It is.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: And also you mentioned drumming, Meredith.
Meredith Oke:Drumming. Well, you know, drumming. We talked
Meredith Oke:earlier about this idea that your heartbeat is
Meredith Oke:actually. They are. They are actually pulses. Of
Meredith Oke:low frequency sound. You know, the center
Meredith Oke:frequency of a heart sound is average, is about
Meredith Oke:100 hertz, sometimes a little bit lower than
Meredith Oke:that, but it's a low frequency sound. And that
Meredith Oke:causes oxygen to bind or helps to that process of
Meredith Oke:oxygen binding that's dissolved in the
Meredith Oke:bloodstream and then it binds to the hemoglobin
Meredith Oke:every time there's a heartbeat. Well, the same
Meredith Oke:thing happens with drumming. You know, every drum
Meredith Oke:beat is a pulse of low frequency sound. And low
Meredith Oke:frequency sound penetrates deeply into your body.
Meredith Oke:In fact, if it's low enough, it goes right
Meredith Oke:through your body. Actually, a very low frequency
Meredith Oke:sound goes traveling literally right through your
Meredith Oke:body. So can you imagine now that if you're
Meredith Oke:involved in a drumming circle that every single
Meredith Oke:beat is helping the oxygenation level of your in
Meredith Oke:your bloodstream? So that's a wonderful thing.
Meredith Oke:It's a very healing thing to do, you know, to
Meredith Oke:drum. And of course it's one of the first musical
Meredith Oke:instruments to be created by humankind. You know,
Meredith Oke:I don't think it's the very first. I think the
Meredith Oke:very first was actually a flute using animal
Meredith Oke:bones. But, but the, the drum came, you know, not
Meredith Oke:much later than that. And so it's a wonderful
Meredith Oke:thing to do is drumming. Very healing.
Meredith Oke:Okay, I'm going to, what I'm going to do next is
Meredith Oke:I'm going to download the Cymatics app and then
Meredith Oke:I'm going to go get. I have a big drum that I got
Meredith Oke:for my children when they were younger and I'm
Meredith Oke:going to drum into the app.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: If I go back to the app now, just quickly. Hang
Meredith Oke:on, just. I go back to the app now. You, you
Meredith Oke:might be able to see here, for those of you who
Meredith Oke:are actually watching this on video, where my
Meredith Oke:finger is here, you might be able to see musical
Meredith Oke:notes popping up. Right. So it's basically
Meredith Oke:showing you that those frequency, the dominant
Meredith Oke:frequencies that I mentioned earlier, it's
Meredith Oke:showing you the dominant frequency in terms of a
Meredith Oke:musical note. Well, this app actually goes way
Meredith Oke:beyond what's possible for a human being to sing.
Meredith Oke:It goes down at 27 Hz, which is the lowest note
Meredith Oke:on a piano. Right. Where I mentioned that the
Meredith Oke:lowest note that a human being male can make is,
Meredith Oke:is about 60 hertz. This goes down to 27 and it
Meredith Oke:goes way up to 2,200 or something, which is again
Meredith Oke:way beyond, beyond a female soprano can make. You
Meredith Oke:know, so it's much broader spectrum bandwidth,
Meredith Oke:you could say than a human being can make. But
Meredith Oke:your drumming will probably, if it's a Big drum
Meredith Oke:will probably get down to that 27 hertz. So what
Meredith Oke:you should do, Meredith, is when you're playing
Meredith Oke:the drum, watch that note. See, see how low you
Meredith Oke:can get. It'll show you, you know, the, the note,
Meredith Oke:the lowest note that the drum can make. And
Meredith Oke:that'll be interesting.
Meredith Oke:Oh, that'll be so fun. That'll be my Saturday
Meredith Oke:afternoon project.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: You know, the other wonderful thing is it's only
Meredith Oke:$12 and a lot of apps.
Meredith Oke:Great.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Have so much where you have to buy other stuff
Meredith Oke:within the app. This is not the case. This app is
Meredith Oke:only $12 and that's it. You don't pay anything
Meredith Oke:more ever. And, and yet.
Meredith Oke:Oh, fantastic.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: Within the app, if you go to that top left burger
Meredith Oke:bar, you'll find not only a demonstration of how
Meredith Oke:to use the app, but you'll also find a section on
Meredith Oke:articles. And those articles have some really
Meredith Oke:wonderful information about some sound therapy,
Meredith Oke:music, medicine and so on. So it's a beautiful.
Meredith Oke:So there's education that we can add to, by the
Meredith Oke:way, because that aspect of the app, the article
Meredith Oke:section is not within the app. It's, it's, it's
Meredith Oke:like online. So we can add to that. So as you,
Meredith Oke:you buy the app, but next month we probably add
Meredith Oke:another article and then next month another one
Meredith Oke:and so on. So you'll be building a library of
Meredith Oke:specific specialist knowledge within the app and
Meredith Oke:that's a really great tool to have at your
Meredith Oke:disposal.
Meredith Oke:Oh, that's really wonderful. Yeah. We have a lot
Meredith Oke:of practitioners who listen to this, so they
Meredith Oke:always, they love the new information.

Meredith Oke:So beautiful. And just to recap, because I think,
Meredith Oke:you know, you're bringing together so many of
Meredith Oke:our, of our worlds here, John, with. Our bodies
Meredith Oke:are filled with structured water, communicating
Meredith Oke:with light, communicating with sound. Sound. And
Meredith Oke:now you've created this app where we can print
Meredith Oke:out the structure of our own voice imprint. And
Meredith Oke:so I'm. So we would record our voice, choose an
Meredith Oke:image that speaks to us, print it out, put it up
Meredith Oke:while we sit outside under a tree and meditate,
Meredith Oke:do open eyed meditation, or during our infrared
Meredith Oke:sauna time or red light therapy or whatever
Meredith Oke:people do, and have the light and the sound and
Meredith Oke:the visual biogeometry that came out of our own
Meredith Oke:frequency reflecting back to us. Am I, am I
Meredith Oke:capturing everything? You are. Because this is
Meredith Oke:incredible.
Meredith Oke:John Stuart Reid: It's a really. Yeah, you really, you really
Meredith Oke:understood exactly what I've been referring to.
Meredith Oke:So it is an exciting future that lies ahead for
Meredith Oke:humankind, I believe.
Meredith Oke:I think so too. I think we're just so lucky to be
Meredith Oke:alive right now. There's just so many amazing
